Lesson 1: Seeing Form

Before you sculpt, the most important skill is learning to see the form of your subject. Understanding form helps you translate 3D objects into clay accurately, keeping proportions and volumes realistic.

Why Seeing Form Matters

If you don’t grasp the underlying shapes of your subject, your sculpture may look flat, distorted, or unbalanced. Think of it as laying a strong foundation before building a house — without it, everything else becomes harder.

Practice: Observing Shapes

  • Look at everyday objects and try to break them down into basic shapes: spheres, cubes, cylinders, cones
  • Sketch these shapes lightly to understand proportions
  • Notice how light and shadow reveal the form
  • Practice rotating objects in your mind or on paper
